23rd September 2006: Godmanchester Rovers Reserves Won 3-1 Scott Gatty Cup
Great Paxton started strongly and could have
been 2 up in the first 3 minutes, Dan Smith and Chris Stanton both having
opportunities to score. In the 8th minute Paxton were awarded a free kick just
outside the box, Stanton curled the ball round the wall but the shot hit the
post. On the half hour Paxton got their first, Tony Knowles sprinted down the
left wing, crossed and Stanton fired home from the edge of the area. 5
minutes later it was 2-0, Jon Goodchild weaved his way past 3 players before
hitting a right foot shot into the corner of the net.
Come half time and Godmanchester hadn't had a
meaningful attempt at goal, emergency keeper Simon Goodchild had little to do.
It was in the 55th minute that Godmanchester first tested Goodchild and he
saved well diving to his right. Paxton then scored their 3rd, a long pass from
the back by Michael Peach found Stanton who ran on and slipped the ball past
the keeper. Godmanchester played a fuller part in the second half and could
have scored from a header with 15 minute left, their consolation goal came 3
minute from time, Alex Ramos deft flick giving Goodchild no chance.
In summary Paxton were better all over the
pitch, Peach and Karl Davies were rocks at the back, Jon Goodchild and Luke
Catchpole ran the centre of midfield and the pace of Knowles, Stanton and
Chris Egan gave the visitors problems all game. Also a mention for James Halls
whose power up front provided plenty of space for his team mates to work in.
